This is a shred from DA Pennebaker’s film, Dont Look Back (a documentary upon Bob Dylan’s debate of England in 1965). In a film, Dylan binds up evidence cards for a assembly with difference from a strain upon them. While staring during a camera, he flips a cards as a strain plays. Interestingly, there have been conscious errors via a video. For instance, a song’s lyrics contend “eleven dollar bills,” though a print says “20 dollars”. The video takes place in an alley at the back of The Savoy Hotel in …

Bob Dylan isn’t cool. He’s just him. “Cool” wasn’t what he was aiming for.

Beat Poet Allen Ginsberg and his boyfriend Poet Peter Orlovsky are seen to the left in the background. “The Subterraneans” was a book by Beat writer Jack Kerouac (one on of Dylan’s influences)- a name he used to describe the Artist/Drug/Poet culture of NY- meaning “underground/not seen”. Dylan is describing the same scene here. People buying and selling drugs, paranoid about getting caught, thinking success/society is a sham. “Losers, cheaters, six time users hanging ’round the theaters”.

The song is describing a NY drug scene like “The French Connection”- same years. “Maggie comes…talkin bout the heat” The HEAT is the cops “Must Bust in Early May-Orders from the D.A.” = District Attourney pressure. “Keep a clean nose/Watch the plainclothes” = undercover cops. “Jump down a manhole light yourself a candle”-druggies carried candles to melt the speed and Heroin - he’s saying “only safe place to do it is in a manhole” “A pump” slang for a needle. In the end Lyrics mean many things.

Many lines in Dylan’s songs are using drug slang of the time. “In the basement mixing up the medicine” refers to speed-made in basements an bathtubs (because it explodes!). “Man in a pigpen wants 11 dollar bills you only got 10″ - a drug deal in a seedy place. “Don’t follow leaders” a leader would bring a buyer to a deal-but could be an undercover. “6 time Users” -addicts. He was in the drug culture Ginsburg/Warhol Factory (did a “Screen Test”). Lou Reed sang of same culture at the same time.

This is the ultimate cruising music. If you dont believe me just pop in one of his cd’s and drive around.
Even cooler is that you see Ginsberg in the background.

okay i’ve been bored and flipping through the comments on this video and you’ve left like 60 about how much you don’t like Bob Dylan which is clearly a cry for attention seeing that the majority of people who reed these comments are huge Dylan fans.
