I think its more of a percentage than an actual number - if say for arguments sake that only a 1000 records were sold in a week you may only need to sell 100 to make the charts.

It depends on how many copies that singe sells in comparison to other singles. Number one could have sold 1 million copies one week, but next week’s number one could only have sold 100. It’s all realative.

As a rough average of the past decade, a Number One record has sold approximately 133,000 copies per week. Sales of 25,000 have been sufficient to reach the Top 10 - particularly during early January when sales are traditionally lower.

On a slow week, less than 1000 will usually place you into the top 100.

It depends on how much everything else sells.

I think that airplay has a lot to do with what gets in the charts as much as how many copies a single has sold. And given how much some commercial radio stations play to death some of the most lame of pop songs it kind of explains why they appear to be doing so well.
